The Journal Club that is becoming The Podcast!
In 2020, I launched a virtual journal club to bring together a diverse group of individuals—academically, geographically, and professionally—to explore the culture, literature, and processes of laboratory safety from multiple perspectives. At its peak, the club had over 100 registered members, with 10-25 participants actively engaging in each session.
In 2021, as I focused on writing my Ph.D. dissertation, I had to pause the club. Since then, I’ve missed the energy and community it fostered and have been searching for a way to recreate and expand that experience. That journey has led to the creation of this podcast!
Below, you’ll find some great memories shared by former Journal Club participants—reflections that capture what that space meant to us and my hope for what this podcast will become for even more people.
I can’t wait for Jessica’s new podcast on lab training! She created and moderated a very engaging process and content in her Journal Club. I was always drawn into the topic and thoroughly enjoyed the fun and spirited conversations.
Jonathan Klane
The journal club was a wonderful place to exchange ideas about laboratory safety. Jessica brought together speakers and identified current topics of interest to help all levels of lab personnel. The focus on Culture made the series go beyond compliance to look at issues not usually discussed at the time.
Anthony Appleton, Ph.D.
Jessica led an engaging group of safety experts discussing communication through table readings and group commentary. These real-time discussions fostered an environment where people could develop impactful ideas.
Jesse Decker
The journal club led by Jessica was one of the more impactful learning opportunities I’ve had as a safety professional. She created a forum that brought together individuals from various career stages to collaboratively explore hot topics in the field and to better understand not just the ‘what’ but the critical ‘why’ behind effective safety practices. I’m excited to see how the new podcast evolves and its potential influence on today’s safety professionals, students, and lab personnel.
Mary Lindstrom
I first met Jessica in the fall of 2020 when she developed a series on Safety Culture as part of the weekly safety journal club presentations and I was more than happy to be invited as one of the speakers. The remaining presentations during the semester were fascinating, topical, and well-moderated by Jessica. Her thoughtful approach to the topic of chemical safety made the hours go by quickly with a great distribution and distillation of information.
Dominick Casadonte, Ph.D.
Jessica’s journal club was an engaging space for both students and seasoned professionals. She curated a compelling mix of topics and speakers, ensuring each session was insightful and highly relevant. Her deep understanding of adult learning fostered meaningful discussions, making every conversation dynamic and engaging. With a thoughtful approach to moderation, she made complex topics accessible and encouraged deeper exploration beyond the surface.

ACS Digital Learning Solutions on Lab Safety
I recruited and oversaw Subject Matter Experts to develop 4 WCAG accessible, progressively more challenging digital courses on lab safety for a college student audience. Then I worked with Marketing and Sales to develop marketing collateral for the courses – select the buttons below for samples.

CHAS Peer-Led Workshops Development and Expansion
I managed a team to redevelop an in-person workshop into a highly interactive virtual workshop employing adult education methodologies. I then worked with another team to add a 2nd workshop to this series following a similar approach. Select the buttons below to learn more about the workshops.

The Laboratory Safety Team (LST) Community of Practice
I cultivated a pipeline of graduate student leaders to transform the peer-led workshops into a community of practice that empowers current graduate students to engage with safety professionals as partners in improving academic laboratory work.
